Inches to CM Converter

Inches to centimeters, as you type.

What this does

Converts inches to centimeters the moment you type. Multiply by 2.54 — that's the entire formula, because the inch has been legally defined as exactly 2.54 cm since 1959. Edit either side; the other follows.

Where inches show up (even in metric countries)

Even if you think in metric, inches sneak in through products: screen diagonals (a 27″ monitor is 68.6 cm corner to corner), wheel and bicycle sizes, pipe fittings, vinyl records, and US clothing measurements. This page exists for exactly those "okay but how big is that really?" moments.

Handy inch values in centimeters

  • 1 in = 2.54 cm
  • 6 in = 15.24 cm — about the length of a dollar bill
  • 8.5 × 11 in (US Letter) = 21.59 × 27.94 cm — why it never quite fits A4 printers
  • 12 in (1 ft) = 30.48 cm
  • 24 in = 60.96 cm · 32 in = 81.28 cm — common waist sizes
  • 36 in (1 yd) = 91.44 cm

How do screen sizes translate?

A screen's advertised size is its diagonal. Multiply by 2.54 for the metric diagonal: 15.6″ laptop = 39.6 cm, 27″ monitor = 68.6 cm, 65″ TV = 165.1 cm. Note the diagonal says nothing about width and height — that depends on the aspect ratio.

What about fractions of an inch, like 3 5/8″?

Convert the fraction to a decimal first: 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625, so 3 5/8″ = 3.625 in = 9.2075 cm. Imperial measurements below an inch are customarily given in halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths — each sixteenth is just under 1.6 mm.
